causes of divorce

The changing of women’s status and social attitude toward divorce are two main reasons of the increase in divorce rate. Women used to be completely dependent on men as the husbands were the only provider of the family’s income. Therefore, even if the marriage was disastrous, the wives could not leave their husband as they would not be able to live on their own. At the present time, women have more freedom and can earn a living themselves. As a result, it is now easier for them to decide whether they can get a divorce or not. A good illustration of this is that in Guadong Province (China), 70 percent of divorce request is submitted by women. Another principal reason is that nowadays, divorce no longer carries the social stigma that it used to. In the past, in spite of unhappy marriages, many couples still stayed together as they were afraid of being humiliated and embarrassed. Nowadays, as divorce has become normal, people do not make as many moral judgments on it as before. This, of course, has resulted in an enormous number of breaking-ups in the modern world. In conclusion, there are no clear answers whether divorce is good or bad but it is definitely changing our ways of life.
